PAST and present BB members celebrated a golden jubilee recently.

The 5th Kirkintilloch Boys' Brigade Company Section was formed on November 2, 1958. Fifty years on, a series of special events have marked the special anniversary in style.

A civic reception, hosted by Provost Alex Hannah, recognised the contribution the organisation makes to the Kirkintilloch community.

Provost Hannah presented the company with a commemorative plaque and helped cut a special 50th birthday cake.

He said: "It was my privilege to welcome the BB company to Tom Johnston House and to congratulate them, on behalf of the people of East Dunbartonshire, on their golden anniversary.

"It is thanks to the hard work and dedication of the adults who selflessly volunteer that the group has thrived over the last half-century.

"As a community we owe them a debt of gratitude for giving local boys the opportunity to get involved with such an excellent organisation.

"I'd like to wish the company 'happy birthday' and hope they go from strength to strength over the next 50 years in Kirkintilloch."

The civic reception was followed by an anniversary dinner in the Garfield House Hotel, Stepps, where members from throughout the years got the chance to reminisce about old times.

Special guest at the dinner was the Reverend Frank Haughton, who gave the dedication service in St Mary's Parish Church on the day the company was formed.

Reverend Haughton told the Herald: "It was great to see all the former members come together to celebrate the event."

An exhibition opened in St Mary's Parish Church looking back on the company's 50-year history. The exhibition included recently-discovered film of the colours being presented to the company section in 1958.

The 5th Kirkintilloch Boys' Brigade will soon be celebrating it's 50th anniversary and we would like to invite any former boys, Queens men or Officers to join us in celebrating this milestone.

The 5th was formed on 10th November 1958 and has run continuously since then. It is our intention to hold a series of events in November, hopefully covering most aspects of Company life. Throughout the weekend we will have displays of company memorabilia,  If anyone has anything that they feel would be of interest to young or old please let us know. We will label any items with the donors name and ensure their safe return after the anniversary. Also we hope to hold a Celebration Dinner, if you would like to attend, please lets us know

Following some research I found that The Junior Section (then The Life Boys) began meeting in St. Mary’s on 17 February 1958 and the Company Section was founded in St. Mary’s on 10 November 1958.  During my research it was also ascertained that the Junior Section (then as Life Boys) was founded in Waterside on 18 November 1957 by Iain Little, James Little, James McAllister, Archie Smith and Janet Stevenson and the records show that there were 37 boys attending on a regular basis.

I would remind all members, and former members, of the 5th Kirkintilloch Boys’ Brigade that it is proposed to hold a celebratory dinner in November to commemorate the 50th Anniversary and I am particularly keen to find any kind of memorabilia or photographs from the early years, so if you have anything which you think would be of interest, would like to attend the November function and talk about old times please contact Church office 0845 224 1026 , Iain Hill (Company Section) on 0845 224 1052 or the Youth Convenor, Garry Burns, on 0845 224 1084.  Details of the actual date, location and cost, of the dinner will be intimated as soon as possible.
